Cavalcata di San Giuseppe 2024: A Summer Spectacle in Scicli

Scicli, Sicily — August 16, 2024
The baroque town of Scicli was ablaze with color and tradition on August 16, 2024, as it hosted a remarkable summer edition of the Cavalcata di San Giuseppe. Usually held in March, this out-of-season celebration transformed Scicli’s historic center into a grand stage of devotion, folklore, and stunning visual artistry—drawing both locals and visitors into a shared cultural embrace.

A Dazzling August Revival
This special summer Cavalcata was part of a wider initiative to promote Scicli’s heritage during the peak tourist season. Set beneath the warm Sicilian sky, it allowed a broader audience to witness the town’s most beloved tradition in an unforgettable late-summer atmosphere.

Horses, Flowers, and the Amazons of Scicli

As per tradition, the parade was led by horses adorned in elaborate flower-covered “manti”, handmade tapestries crafted from wildflowers, herbs, and straw. But what set this year’s event apart—and became the talk of the evening—was the striking presence of female riders, or “Amazons”, who brought a renewed energy and elegance to the cavalcade.

These Amazons didn’t just ride with poise and confidence—they did so in handmade and hand-painted dresses, each one a work of wearable art. Crafted by local artisans and inspired by folkloric and mythological themes, the dresses told their own stories, blending historical symbolism with modern creativity. Their commanding presence on horseback added a powerful visual and symbolic layer to the celebration, representing strength, grace, and a reimagined role in a male-dominated tradition.

A Community United in Art and Devotion

From neighborhood workshops to spontaneous street performances, the Cavalcata sparked collective participation throughout Scicli. Locals competed to create the most intricate horse mantles, many of which depicted scenes from the life of San Giuaseppi or Sicilian pastoral life.

Live folk music and traditional food stalls lined the procession route, offering passersby a full sensory immersion into Sicilian culture. Storytellers shared tales of the Cavalcata’s origins as a prayer for rain and agricultural blessings, grounding the festivities in deep-rooted history.

An Evolving Tradition

The Cavalcata di Scicli usually takes place in Piazza Italia, but for the August 2024 edition, the event extended into the heart of the historic center, along Via Dolomiti, offering a spectacular backdrop that blended tradition with architectural beauty. Promoted on the Visit Scicli website and warmly supported by the local community, this summer celebration attracted hundreds of visitors and media attention from across Sicily and beyond. Among the highlights were the unforgettable Amazons on horseback, riding through the old town in hand-painted, artisanal dresses that brought both elegance and strength to the timeless procession.

Photographer Giorgia Sardelli contributed significantly to this edition, with her stunning photography capturing not only the intricate craftsmanship of the floral decorations but also the evocative charm of Scicli’s historic center. Her work transformed fleeting moments into powerful visual narratives that helped immortalize the essence of the Cavalcata.

With the success of this special August edition, discussions have already begun about establishing it as a new annual tradition to complement the March celebration—bringing Scicli’s rich heritage to an even wider audience.
